          AS WE TURN THREE
TURNING THREE, FLASHBACK
TURNING THREE, FLASHBACK
My dear fellow members at JAGRITI SEVA SANSTHAN,
I WANT TO START WITH AN HONEST CONFESSION: I AM HAPPY TODAY. No, not just happy, I am on the verge of falling down with euphoria!!! Well I can mention at least two big , very big reasons for being in this hysteric bout of euphoria- FIRST, we were gifted with monsoon and second we completed our third year and beauty you see, lies in the fact that both happened at the same time (yes, I never expected 5 July to be so beautiful!!). So guys, as I pen down this annual write-up, I know I am just proving myself to be a Dumbo for, this is time of jubilation. Sure I am going to join you soon on this very very special occasion.
But before I end up losing my senses to the prevalent aura, I want to talk seriously for a few minutes (yes SERIOUSLY, bear with me please, as I always say). FIRST and foremost let me say something I will perhaps never be able to say in my normal state- I LOVE YOU ALL!!!  My mortal senses unfailingly get catapulted to a higher state in your company. Yes JAGRITI was something I dreamt about, but it completed three years only because you dared to buy this idea. And this is the reason this write up is addressed to you.
THE PAST ONE YEAR was indeed quite happening. The admission drive for 2011 fetched us 11 more gems after a long, stressful and difficult but carefully planned and precisely executed SEARCH OPERATION in the town. Summer coaching programme was a new start that we plan to continue on the annual basis as it is the only way students of KAIRANA, especially from poor socio economic class can afford to get some really meaningful EDUCATION from nonprofessional teachers. The fact that no fee was charged only added to its utility. We did get a good response in terms of numbers and were also successful in filtering out some hidden talents on whom we are paying special attention. I am confident that, God willing, they will become the torch bearers for generation to come. But I must say those were hectic days, taking classes in morning and hunting for poor potential in the by lanes and dusty roads of kairana, it was by Allah almighty’s mercy that we withstood those testing times.
When we decided to organise the JAGRITI RATNA AWARD FOR MERITORIOUS STUDENTS function and BLOOD DONATION CAMP almost at the same time (wasn’t that almost the same time, REMEMBER just 16 hours interval) sceptics argued that we are going to screw big this time. Well, they were almost correct if conditions were to be analysed. I remember many a good friends of mine and well-wishers of SANSTHAN argued with me about the futility of such hastily planned events especially when we were facing tough times financially. Why so?? Why can’t we wait?? People will not turn up to get their blood drained in scorching summer?? And the team must be exhausted, tired?? So many ifs and buts were there that I , for once really thought about postponing one of the events . But your enthusiasm stopped me. And you proved the sceptics wrong!! From mopping the floor of programme venue to fixing the shamiyaana and arranging the furniture, you did it all by yourselves. And none of you complained. The same mountain like will power and firm determination led to the successful organisation of  WINTER COACHING PROGRAMME and CAREER COUNSELLING SESSION in January this year.
But we are far away from the goals we have set for ourselves. It is just a small beginning, at best an attempt to improve, to change the existing for good, little by little, but forever.

on 2nd birthday

ON SECOND BIRTHDAY
Two years back, on this day jagriti was born. More than anything, it has been a journey, journey full of sacrifices, roadblocks, rebukes, rebuttals, snubs, rivalry, jealousy. But more than that, it has been a journey of my incompetent self.
This journey has made me strong. I learnt to take take risks.
To be honest i am not a born social activist. My notions of poverty and social structure can at best be labelled as average. Neither me nor anyone from my family is formally trained or for that matter inclined towards all this stuff called social service. Although during the last two years considerable time was spent in shuttling between Aligarh and Kairana, still i managed to keep a good record of happenings and incidents. Here, on the second anniversary of JAGRITI I will try to recall the most defining moments of the last two years. Point to be noted is that most of the events actually happened well after the formal establishment of JAGRITI. But we are still in our infancy as an organisation and I don’t feel any shame or reluctance in admitting that except the formation of core ideology we are still on a learning platform.
1. MEETING HARSH MANDER: MY HERO
For the beginners, Harsh Mander is a social activist working for minority rights, rights of poors and women. He also writes regularly on these topics and is a voice that is heeded even in government circles and bureaucracy. On 16 september, 2009 (2 months after the beginning) the bureaucrat (IAS, resigned after Gujarat riots of 2002) delivered a lecture at the Arts faculty of Aligarh Muslim university .the event coincided with the release of his book FEAR AND FORGIVENESS:THE AFTERMATH OF MASSCARE. The bald man spoke softly mixing English and hindi. By any standards he was an average speaker. I listened spellbound. the stories of widows of Sikhs killed in anti sikh riots of 1984 in delhi ,the behaviour and interaction of majority and minority community after the godhra riots and the cheap and narrow mentality with which people in power behaved and were behaving ,all that shook me. That day i decided to include COMMUNAL HARMONY in the domain of JAGRITI.
2. FIRST GBM: JAGRITI FORMAL INTRODUCTION
23 september,2009.It was a fine Wednesday evening .Only 11 people attended. and none of the co founders was there. Nothing significant happened apparently .but as they say a small step for man but a giant leap for mankind. Today when I saw the meeting attendance it gave a very satisfying feeling that 7 out of those 11 have played key roles in taking the organisation forward.
3. HOLI MILAN: MEETIING OLD PALS AND SENIORS
The party went on till late in the evening. I was the host and the gathering was characteristicallyJAGRITIsed , a careless mix-up of Hindus and Muslims. But there was something more than that-all of the presentees were professionals or students studying in different cities of India, full of energy and ideas. I FELT SUCCESSFUL FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!!
4. ADMISSION DRIVE: INTRODUCTION WITH REAL CONDITION OF FELLOW CITIZENS
My notions of class, caste, poverty and richness took a sharp turn during those 7 days. It was summer and the toughest task was to go out every day to different areas of town, often on foot. That was a really difficult time for me. To be frank I had not expected such a degenerated scenario. There were rich unwilling people and there were poor willing people and there were poor unwilling and suspicious people. How will you ask a 20 year old widowed ,working, mother of four to get her eldest daughter admitted to primary school, when the rented house they were living in didn’t even have a properly covered room. The only furniture in the house was a cot and as we learnt later, even that was arranged for our visit.
Then there was the thatched hut of Manoj, a Hindu dalit in aldarmiyan area of kairana. His wife also offered a similar type of broken , disfigured cot, the only furniture that the family owned. Again the same difficulty: how, in what manner should I mention the word education for her 3 children Deepak , Sagar, and Vishal when father is terminally ill and unable to venture out. Deepak and Sagar would go to a brick kiln as a daily wagers with their mother and and 6 year old Vishal would stay back at home to take care of ailing father and a house without walls or any gate. Life was a bounded routine for all of them and there was no space for any new indulgence that does not yield bucks. For the first time, I FELT HELPLESS. I FELT LIKE CRYING.AND THEN I PRAYED. ALMIGHTY listened to us.2 of them are in school now obviously on JAGRITI EXPENSES.
5. JAGRITI WEEK: FIRST STEP IN CO-CURRICULAR
First of its kind in the town an inter school level of competition of this big magnitude was organised. And do you know how many were involved in the real field execution????Only 5 members,Hammad, Vandana, Gaurav, Saleem and Atif beside me. We were inexperienced, technically handicapped , financially compromised and physically exhausted. And believe me THAT WAS A SUCCESS!!! If getting almost 1000 entries for evaluation in various competitions like essay, quiz poster and debate WITHIN 4 DAYS is not success i don’t what is. It happened because we all believed that we are doing something selflessly something good.

THE HOPE CALLED SWARAJ

Freedom is for educated people who fought for it. We were slaves of the English , now we will be slaves of educated Indians- or the Pakistanis
- TRAIN TO PAKISTAN
(by KHUSHWANT SINGH)
WAS this a random rambling from a super-excited journalist writing a novel?????? We cant say for sure- and that's not the question of today. The important thing is , we got a prophecy in this line ; today to obvious to be ignored.

More than 60 years have passed, but WE are still yearning for SWARAJ. Interestingly , over the past 60 years the notions of both WE and SWARAJ have undergone a change. When my country was left by the BRITISH rulers in 1947(i will not use the conventional phrase "we became free" that is only what we were made to believe), WE meant WE, INDIANS. yes their was caste discrimination , their was religious anarchy and a whole lot of social evils of those times. BUT WE HAD HOPE!!! and we all know what was the undercurrent , the base of that hope....... that was swaraj, self rule. Where we were the masters of our affairs. where no one can do the unwarranted nose poking into our lives.

Sadly today that flame of hope is dimmed . today we are competing with all kinds of nations , newly independent, newly rich , autocracies and democracies, with varying HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Indexes(HDI). We are ahead of some of them and we feel a momentary sense of pride in this. But the truth is- we are far away from our original ideal, the real national aim of an equitable society, a just nation . And we are not lacking because we couldn't catch up to the speed of the world because of our inherent corruption and so and so(people have a lot of ready-made diagnosis); NO. THAT IS BECAUSE WE LOST TRACK. We lost our real aims , our aspirations , our ideals. WE LOST INDIA.

But as i have written ,the flame of hope has dimmed,, it is flickering under the turbulent wind of change, but it has no textinguished yet. TODAY ON 26TH JANUARY 2012, I will pray for the safety of that flickering flame , that hope. I hope INDIA will join me.
